Clean Temporary Files

Temporary files are exactly as their name suggests, not intended to remain in your PC permanently. There are two main types, Temporary files and Temporary Internet files.

Temporary files are by default, hidden by Windows. To view them you will need to set Windows to Show hidden files and folders. Help. This area of your computer will be used by some programs during their normal operations, but the fact that they are hidden also makes them a popular place for Trojans and other malware to reside.

Temporary Internet files, (sometimes referred to as Internet cache) stores copies of images you view through your browser, so if you return to a particular web page, it can be loaded from your PC as opposed to having to wait for it to download again. Also stored here are Cookies and your browsing history.

To manually clean these areas of your PC,

1) Click Start and All programs (or Programs, depending on which version of Windows you use). Hold your mouse over Accessories to expand the list, then System tools and click Disk Clean up.

2) Select the drive you wish to clean, usually 'C'. The Disk Clean up utility will offer various clean up options including Temporary files and Temporary Internet files. Click OK to begin cleansing. Close the Disk clean up box once complete.

3) Right click the internet Explorer icon on your desktop, Start menu or all programs list and select properties to open the Internet properties box.

On the General tab, click the following buttons -
delete cookies
Delete files
Clear History

Click Apply then OK

To view Temporary Internet files -
Click the Settings button for Temporary Internet files in the internet properties box. Click View files in the settings box that opens.

If you want to see what temporary files are stored in your PC, or make sure they are all gone,-
Open Windows Explorer (Right click Start and select Explore). In the left panel, click Drive C, then documents and Settings. Under each user account in turn and All users, click Local settings, you will now see temporary files. You can open the file and examine the contents.
