Spyware quake is spyware cleaner that is installed by a trojan and then displays fake infection warnings in an attempt to trick people into buying the scanner.

Visible signs of infection.

Your Internet Explorer Homepage may be changed to

  • http://www.systemupdates.net
  • http://www.theguardservices
  • http://www.securityfeature.com
  • http://www.safetydefender.com


  • A pop up from your taskbar, near the clock warning your system has detected virus activity which may cause critical system failure.

    Clicking on the balloon will install the Spyware Quake scanner.

    The Security toolbar may be installed.

    Links to
    SpywareQuake.com,
    Antivirus Test Online,
    Online Security Center
    Security Troubleshooting

    may be added to your Desktop, IE favourites and Start Menu.

    PurityScan may be installed.

    MediaTickets Adware may be installed.

    Pop ups, usually with adult content may be displayed.

    I have written a small program that will look for, and delete if found, files and registry keys associated with this infection.

    You will also need-

    Ewidow Due to the quantity of downloader trojans that install or accompany these infections, additional malware is likely to have been installed. A fully functional Demo (Free trial) version is available, which reverts to the Free version after 14 days. Download, install and update the scanner ready for use.

    Ace Utilities, a comprehensive disk and registry cleaner. (Free trial)
    Cautionary note : In addition to the scans included in the removal procedure, this collection of cleaning tool includes Remove Duplicate files, Remove Empty folders and Auto-Start manager. these options should not be attempted unless you are fully able to understand and investigate the output. Acting on a misinterpretation of the results could result in damage to your System.

    Removal procedure

    1)Restart your PC in Safe Mode How to.

    2) Double click on the roguefix.bat icon on your desktop and allow the tool to run. Follow the onscreen prompts, you will be given the option of resetting your Desktop background and your Homepage back to the Windows default settings.

    3) Run a full system scan with Ewido

    4) Restart your PC in 'normally' (not in safe mode).

    5) Open Ace Utilities and perform the following scans.


    Depending on your general cleaning routine, this cleaner may remove many redundant or obsolete files and registry keys.

    Click clean up , select remove Junk Files.
    Scan and delete everything found. Close the remove junk files box.

    Select Clean system registry.
    Click options and select Thorough. Scan and delete everything found. Close the Clean system registry box.

    Select Erase History, click the Windows tab and select the following-
    Empty the Windows Prefetch Folder.
    Delete empty folders on the Windows Temp folder.
    Erase Folder streams in the Windows registry.
    Clear past icon history of system tray

    Click Execute Now

    Click the internet Explorer/MSN tab and select the following-
    Delete cookies
    Delete locked URL cache file.
    Clear typed URL's of Address bar
    Clear Browser History
    Delete Cache (Files in temporary Internet folder)

    Click Execute Now.

    If any icons remain on your desktop or start menu, use the Fix invalid shortcuts option or right click on the icon and select delete from the menu that appears.

    To manually reset your homepage
    Right click on the Internet explorer icon on your desktop or Start menu to open the internet properties box. Select the Programs tab and click the Reset Web settings button.
    Click Apply then OK

    Your computer should now be free of Spyware Quake.

    To protect yourself against future infections, make sure you have all Windows critical updates and the latest version of java Update
